LEARN POLISH EFFECTIVELY!
During my Polish lessons I can so often hear my students’ comments like this:
“I’m not able to remember this completely new Polish vocabulary!”, “I’ve forgotten everything!”, “I studied Polish yesterday and nothing!”
How to learn Polish?
At the beginning of learning Polish process, please, guys, remember that Polish is a brand new language for your brain. It means you will undergo the whole “acquiring new information process”. It also means you will face the continuous ups and downs, a “never ending sine wave story” of forgetting and recalling new stuff.
Just because any learning process looks like that.
If it doesn’t in your case, you’re not learning anything new.
Look at The Ebbinghaus forgetting curve:
It shows us clearly that we lose some information over time. We forget everything we’ve learned after one week if there is no opportunity to recall new information.
The biggest loss takes place just after a learning session – you or your teacher close the door and by definition you forget 50 % of your Polish lesson.
And it’s getting worse – you don’t do your homework the very next day and you are already below a half; any time you cancel your next lesson, you need to move on from only 25 % during the following class.
But luckily for us, we can work on it.
The most effective tool to overcome forgetting and to enhance learning is spaced repetition technique.
Going through learning process – from point A, which is our short term memory to point Z, which is our long term memory – requires permanent recalling every time we start forgetting new information.
More or less, we have to revise a bit of new Polish vocabulary or a piece of Polish grammar just after the class, then – one or two hours later, then – next day, in two days, in 4 days, in a week etc.
The intervals between the content we learn might be bigger and bigger if recalling is easy and kind of automatic.
And we have it just within the range of one click with all popular learning apps for languages, which use the algorithms based on this neurocognitive knowledge.
Yes, you will be constantly forgetting your Polish – there is no way to change our brains;
But there is a way to learn Polish despite this brutal truth – with spaced repetition technique.
